Adaptation and differentiation

Here is a summary of the strategies you have chosen to incorporate in this {{ other || plan }}.

Think again of all the students in your class. There may be some whose needs will still not be fully met by the strategies that you’ve chosen so far.

Are there any students whose needs will not be fully met by the strategies you've already chosen?

Adaptations and differentiations, which you won’t provide for all, may be needed for these students.

You may want to plan these adaptations and differentiations in consultation with your school’s learning support coordinator. And if any students have an Individual Education Plan, adaptations and differentiations should align with the plan.

  • Adaptations

Adaptations are changes to the supports – the classroom, teaching and learning strategies, and materials.

Some adaptations will work for many students who have additional needs, while others are much more specific to a disability.

To identify adaptations to use, you may want to read about reducing learning barriers in relation to specific disabilities.

Are there any students in the class who require specific adaptations in this {{ other || plan }} to:

    • remain engaged and motivated?
    • access the learning materials, information, and activities?
    • generate, express, and share their ideas?

  • Differentiations

Differentiations are changes to the classroom programme – the content of the class curriculum and expected responses to it.

Students benefit from high expectations and being challenged. Take a look at these snapshots of teachers differentiating curriculum content and allowing for a range of responses from their students.

Now think about the students in your class and answer these questions to help you plan differentiations for your {{ other || plan }}:

    Would some students benefit from:

using similar but less or more complex content?
    adjusting the expected responses?
    adjusting the learning outcomes?
